The white settlers, after all, were the newcomers. The formation of the National Parks was the white man's attempt at preserving a natural phenomenon and, in the process, subsuming the Native American's traditional holy site into a place with no acknowledgment of the Native Americans or their sense of 'place'; for they'd also had villages on parts of the park area.
