The novel is based on an island near the bottom of the world - the Australian state of Tasmania The story turns the tables on a very unpopular former mayor in the town of Windy Mountain. This uppity senior citizen is secretly behind a plan to demolish a much-loved Art Deco cafe on the eve of Christmas so that a lucrative tower block can be built in the heart of the town. But while he thinks he is getting one over the townsfolk, a figure from his past returns to get revenge on him in an elaborate sting with sharp teeth.
