Chr.), das Vai??ava-Textkorpus (insbesondere das Nalayiradivviyapirabandham, 6.–9. Jahrhundert n. Chr.), die Pura?ische Literatur (insbesondere das Vi??upura?a, 5.–6. Jahrhundert n. Chr.), die Pañcaratra-Literatur und spätere (10.–14. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) philosophische und theologische Werke des theistischen Visi??advaita Vedanta, in denen Vi??u-Naraya?a eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, zur Erforschung der komplexen Geschichte Naraya?as beizutragen, indem unterschiedliche Textzeugnisse und gedankliche Konzepte, die mit dieser Gottheit in verschiedenen indischen religiösen Traditionen verbunden sind, untersucht werden. Die Entwicklung Naraya?as wird von den vedischen Texten bis hin zu späteren Werken wie dem Mahabharata und Hariva?sa nachgezeichnet. Auch seine Bedeutung in der Pañcaratra-Tradition und seine Verbindung mit der aufkommenden vi??uitischen Tradition, die in seiner zentralen Rolle im theistischen Vedanta gipfelt, werden diskutiert. The contributions in this volume address the complex history of the Indian deity Vi??u-Naraya?a, whose conception evolved across various traditions in India, particularly in South India, during the first millennium CE. This development is reconstructed through philological exegesis, the history of ideas, and iconographic evidence. Contributors examine a range of textual materials in Sanskrit, Tamil, and Ma?iprava?a, including early Ca?kam literature (3rd–6th century CE), the Vai??ava text corpus (notably the Nalayiradivviyapirabandham, 6th–9th century CE), Pura?ic literature (especially the Vi??upura?a, 5th–6th century CE), Pañcaratra literature, and later (10th–14th century CE) philosophical and theological works of theistic Visi??advaita Vedanta, in which Vi??u-Naraya?a plays a central role. The volume also explores how Vi??u-Naraya?a came to be viewed as a solitary supreme God, with a reconstruction of theological arguments supporting his monotheism. The aim is to contribute to the study of Naraya?a’s complex history by exploring various textual and conceptual structures associated with this deity across different Indian religious traditions. It traces Naraya?a’s evolution to later works like the Mahabharata and Hariva?sa, and discusses also his significance in the Pañcaratra tradition and his association with the emerging Vi??uism, culminating in his central role in theistic Vedanta. Contributors explore Naraya?a’s portrayal in various Sanskrit and Tamil texts, analyzing his depiction in literary works, theological treatises, and philosophical writings. They examine his connections with other deities and discuss his attributes, symbols, and roles in creation myths. The volume delves into the historical development of Naraya?a’s worship, his iconography, and theological significance, highlighting the continuity and transformation of his character across different traditions.
