Uta Zaumseil

Hardly any other artist embodies the search for a contemporary form of expression via the ancient technique of the woodcut as Uta Zaumseil (*1962) does. Zaumseil’s woodcuts tend to take a long time to make due to the size of the format and the elaborate implementation of several colors. The artist makes use of the rare, rather risky technique known as the “lost plate,” in which parts of the surface are constantly removed. The result is then printed on top of the existing image in a different color. Zaumseil shatters the viewer’s expectations, since large sections of the images are as familiar as they are inexplicable. The artist places the pictorial, photorealistic elements taken from everyday life and the environment in colorful spaces or confronts them with structures that seem to be abstract and removed from our world of objects. “The strangely archaic nature of the woodcut meets the banality of our present time.” (Andreas Strobl) Uta Zaumseil (*1962) verkörpert wie kaum eine andere die Suche nach adäquater zeitgemäßer Ausdrucksform in der alten Technik des Farbholzschnittes. Dass Zaumseils Holzschnitte eher langsam entstehen, liegt an der Größe der Formate und dem komplizierten Einsatz mehrerer Farben. Die Künstlerin verwendet die seltene, weil risikoreiche Technik der verlorenen Platte, bei der stetig Teile der Fläche weggenommen werden. Das Ergebnis wird dann jeweils in einer anderen Farbe über das bereits vorhandene Bild gedruckt.Zaumseil bricht die Erwartungshaltung des Betrachters, da weite Teile der Bilder gleichermaßen bekannt wie unerklärlich sind. Die aus Alltag und Umwelt gewonnenen und fotorealistisch umgesetzten Bildelemente stellt die Künstlerin in Farbräume oder konfrontiert sie mit Strukturen, die abstrahiert und unserer Gegenstandswelt enthoben scheinen. »Das befremdlich Archaische der Holzschnitttechnik trifft sich mit der Banalität unserer Gegenwart.« (Andreas Strobl)
