Marine archaeologists Kate Wetherall and Lou Bates are diving a shipwreck near Howland Island - a remote dot in the vast Pacific Ocean - when a deep-sea explosion unearths the remains of a plane on the ocean floor. It is a plane last seen in 1937 - with Amelia Earhart at the controls. When Kate and Lou find a mysterious, corroded metal cylinder hidden in its cockpit, they know instinctively that they have come across something rare and valuable.
