The Demon King and Other Festival Folktales of China

For three days in mid-April, the Dai of southern Yunnan race dragon boats, drench each other with water, and tell how the brave Nan Zhongbu slayed her husband, the Demon King. In early spring, Miao men and women dance to the music of bamboo flutes and wear white feathers in their hats, a symbol of the true love celebrated in the tale of Ahwong and Maosa. These and the two other festival folktales included in this collection take readers of all ages on a fascinating journey to the remote villages of the Dai, Xizang, Miao, and Hani, four minority groups of southwest China. In addition to the Han (ethnic Chinese) majority, there are fifty-five national minority groups living within China's borders, each with its own language, beliefs, festivals, and folktales. The delightful and entertaining legends behind the Dai Water Splashing Festival, the Xizang Bathing Festival, the Miao Lusheng Fair, and the Hani New Year celebration reflect the values and customs of these diverse nationalities. A retelling of each legend is followed by a colorful description of the festival and how it is celebrated today and accompanied by stunning illustrations by award-winning artist Li Ji.
