Spatial Commons

Was haben urbane Freiräume mit Gewerberäumen und Wohnraum zu tun? All diese Räume können im Sinne des Gemeinwesens Stadt als Gemeingu¨ter verstanden werden. Sie bilden unterschiedliche Raumtypen des Gemeinschaffen aus, wenn sie inklusiv und kollektiv angeeignet werden und funktionieren dann jenseits der Zuschreibungen von öffentlich und privat. Diese räumlichen Ressourcen der Stadt, ebenso wie die Regeln, Konventionen und sozialen Beziehungen, die das Zusammenleben in diesen Räumen organisieren, basieren auf einer Vorstellung von Eigentum, die sich am gemeinsamen Gebrauch und nicht am Gewinn orientiert. Dagmar Pelger lotet das vielschichtige und auch widerspru¨chliche Potential des Konzeptes der Commons aus. Durch kartographische Bestandsaufnahmen an konkreten Orten in Berlin werden räumliche Phänomene und Zuschreibungen dieser Vergemeinschaftung sichtbar. Die interdisziplinär entstandenen Mappings geben Aufschluss u¨ber Typen, Prozesse und Regelwerke räumlichen Gemeinschaffens und zeigen damit auch Wege der Gestaltbarkeit von Stadt als Spatial Commons auf. What do open spaces in the city have to do with commercial spaces and housing? If the city is a common good, then recreational, commercial, and residential spaces can all potentially be understood as commons. Through acts of inclusive and collective appropriation, all of these spaces can form spatial types of commoning, that function beyond the categories of public and private. These spatial resources of the city, as well as the rules, conventions, and social relationships that organize coexistence in these spaces, are based on an idea of ownership that is oriented towards common use, rather than profit. Dagmar Pelger explores the multi-layered and often contradictory potential of the concept of the commons. Through cartographic surveys of specific locations in Berlin, she visualizes the spatial phenomena and characteristics of communalization. The interdisciplinary process of mapping provides information about the types, processes, and rules of commoning as a spatial practice. In doing so, it points towards different ways of shaping the city as a spatial commons. Spatial Commons clarifies conceptual terminology and presents practical methods for describing urban space.
