Written during the author's convalescence in the Bukovo monastery, the book strips the countryside of romantic varnish: opportunists rise, the weak are trampled, and ideals grow thin in the dust of everyday necessity. At its center stands the figure of the teacher-educated, conscientious, and painfully aware of the cost of principle. Rankovic's prose is plainspoken but unsparing; his moral vision, exacting.
