I due testi che costituiscono "Allegro ma non troppo" furono scritti in inglese e stampati negli anni Settanta solo in edizione privata. Nel 2011 il Mulino ha infine messo in libreria "The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity". Quest'anno è la volta del secondo dei due saggi, quello con cui nel suo imperturbabile stile british Cipolla ha tracciato una sorta di controstoria burlesca del Medioevo: dai Normanni che navigavano a lungo per star lontani dalle mogli a Pietro l'Eremita che predicò le crociate perché gli piacevano i cibi piccanti, e voleva riaprire la via del commercio del pepe con l'Oriente. Una storia parallela ma plausibile, un po'vera e un po'no. Una storia parodistica ma non troppo.
