In early 2023, tennis legend Martina Navratilova, 66, announced that she had been diagnosed with two types of cancer, one breast and one throat cancer, originating from the human papillomavirus. In the United States alone, about 3,500 cases of oropharyngeal cancers associated with the human papillomavirus are diagnosed each year in women and 16,200 in men. According to WHO, about 5% of cancers are caused by human papillomavirus infections. Some microorganisms have a profound impact on cancer pathogenesis. In fact, almost 20% of malignant cancers in humans are related to microbial infections, including bacteria, parasites and viruses. Studying and understanding in detail the pathogens that are involved in the development of some cancers will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the disease, and to seek the appropriate and necessary tools to annihilate the enemy.
