Le Canada et l’imaginaire du Nord / Canada and the Imagined North

Taking an approach that embraces the Canadian North in its broadest sense, the volume edited by Michal Obszynski and Malgorzata Sokolowicz shows how the imagined North and all that it implies is concretized in the geopolitical, cultural and aesthetic practices in contemporary Canada. While offering a historical perspective, it mainly examines the profound mutations taking place in the Canadian North today. Climate change, the redefinition of the administrative status of the area known as the Far North and the emergence of new voices ? often from Indigenous or migrant communities ? are constantly changing the cultural codes that have long shaped perceptions of the North. The North is evolving, its representation is being transformed, and this volume, which gathers contributions in English and French by scholars from Canada/Québec and Poland, is an attempt to capture, describe and explain these changes. Dans une approche qui couvre le Nord canadien au sens large, le présent volume, publié sous la direction de Michal Obszynski et de Malgorzata Sokolowicz, montre comment l’imaginaire du Nord et tout ce qu’il connote se concrétise de nos jours dans les pratiques géopolitiques, culturelles et esthétiques au Canada. Tout en offrant une certaine perspective historique, il témoigne surtout des mutations profondes se produisant à l’heure actuelle dans le Nord canadien. Les changements climatiques, la redéfinition du statut administratif de l’espace dénommé « Grand Nord » ainsi que l’émergence de nouvelles voix, souvent issues des communautés autochtones du Nord ou des communautés migrantes, ne cessent de modifier les codes culturels qui ont longtemps façonné la perception du Nord. Le Nord change, son imaginaire se transforme et ce volume, réunissant des contributions écrites en anglais et en français par des chercheurs et chercheuses du Canada/Québec et de Pologne, essaie de saisir ces changements, de les décrire et de les expliquer.
