Christopher Muller: easy tools

Einer der ungewöhnlichsten Protagonisten der Fotoszene im RheinlandChristopher Muller, der seit 2009 eine Professur für künstlerische Fotografie an der Folkwang ­Uni­versität innehat, ist seit Mitte/Ende der 1990er Jahre einer der ungewöhnlichsten Protagonisten der Fotoszene im Rheinland. Mit Kunstpreisen etwa des Kunstfonds Bonn 1995 oder der Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung 2004 hat der in London aufgewachsene, am Camberwell ­College of Arts & Craft, der Slade School of Fine Art in London und schließlich an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf ausgebildete Künstler in der Szene einen Platz gefunden. Dabei hat ihn stets seine spezielle Heran­gehensweise ausgezeichnet, die ihn von den KollegInnen unterscheidet. Er kommt vom Stillleben, und hat mit seinen seriell wirkenden Objektfotografien in den 1990er Jahren ent­sprechend für Aufsehen gesorgt. Seine jüngst ent­standenen fotografischen Collagen sowie die zusehends einen breiteren Raum einnehmenden Aquarelle thematisieren das Verhältnis der Dinge zueinander und zugleich unsere Sicht auf sie. Die Bilder verdeutlichen, dass die BetrachterInnen in ein komplexes Gewebe von Gefühlen, Vorlieben und Abneigungen ­verwickelt sind, die auch von ihren Erwar­tungen und Handlungen im Alltag bestimmt werden. One of the most unusual protagonists of the photographic scene in the RhinelandChristopher Muller, who has held a chair in fine art ­photography at Folkwang University since 2009, has been one of the most unusual protag­onists of the photography scene in the Rhineland since the mid/late 1990s. Having been awarded art prizes, for instance, by the Kunstfonds Bonn in 1995 and the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation in 2004, the artist, who grew up in London, trained at Camberwell College of Arts & Craft and the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and finally graduated from the Kunst­akademie in Düsseldorf, made his mark on the scene. He has always had a different approach from that of his colleagues. His background is in still life, and it was precisely within this field that he caused a sensation in the 1990s with his serial-like photographs of objects. His recent series of photographic collages, as well as his notice­ably expanding use of watercolor techniques, address the relation­­ship between things just as much as our view of them. The images clearly show that the viewers are involved in a ­complex web of feelings, likes and dislikes, which are in turn also determined by their expecta­tions and actions in everyday life. Un des protagonistes les plus inhabituels de la scène photographique en RhénanieChristopher Muller, titulaire d’une chaire de photographie artistique à l’université Folkwang depuis 2009, est depuis le milieu/ la fin des années 1990 l’un des représentants les plus singuliers de la scène photographique rhénane. Après avoir remporté des prix artistiques, notamment celui du Kunstfonds de Bonn en 1995 ou de la fondation Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach en 2004, l’artiste qui a grandi à Londres, formé au Camberwell College of Arts & Craft, à la Slade School of Fine Art de Londres et pour finir à la Kunstakademie de Düsseldorf, y a trouvé sa place. Son approche toujours originale l’y a aidé, qui le différencie de ses collègues. Issu de la nature morte, ses photographies d’objets évoquant des séries ont aussi fait sensation dans les années 1990. Ses collages photographiques récents et les aquarelles dont la place dans son œuvre grandit à vue d’œil ont pour sujet le rapport des choses les unes aux autres, en même temps que notre vue sur elles. Les tableaux mettent en évidence la trame complexe de sentiments, préférences et aversions dans laquelle les observateurs sont enchevêtrés et qui sont également déterminés par leurs attentes et leurs actes au quotidien.
