AN EXTRAORDINARY FRIENDSHIP

What does it take to go through life when you grow up in a large institution with no love, abuse, and neglect; never learning to read or write. Then one day you meet someone who helps you fulfill the dreams you had while growing up in the institution. A guide and "guardian angel" who teaches you, protects you, and shares his life with you. The dreams made possible included home ownership and all its complexities. Developing an exhibit to teach children about mental disabilities; being honored in the White House, on national TV, and the stage of the Grand Ol Opry. Finally finding a spiritual awakening that had lain dormant throughout Richard's life. It's a story of friendship, love, and 44 years of brotherhood. It is the story of Richard, a person with intellectual disabilities, who with the support of his friend of 45 years, Manfred, has overcome many barriers, systemic problems, prejudice, and financial hardships. This story is also about true friendship forged through persistency and patience, in the context when one person has real difficulties and challenges understanding this complex world. Over many decades, Manfred has guided Richard's advocacy to reduce the stigma of mental disabilities, and now supports his efforts to be a witness for God."
