Produktinformationen "A Missionary, his Quadrant and the Emperor In the Realm of the Dragon"
This is basically the English edition of the German book: "A Missionary, his quadrant and the Emperor in the Empire of the Dragon". On the one hand it became necessary because of the discovery of a very important further primary source and on the other hand to make the research results available to international Gogeisl research. Therefore, it is to be understood as an extension of the German edition published at the end of 2018. It's a monograph about the Jesuit Anton Gogeisl (1701 - 1771), a China missionary of the 18th century. He came from Siegenburg in Southern Germany and from 1739 he spent the rest of his life in Beijing. Because of his mathematical and astronomical knowledge he was, beside his missionary work, also employed at the imperial court in the empire of the dragon for about 30 years. He was chief astronomer at the observatory and was awarded the title of Mandarin as a sign of his membership of the highest imperial civil service and held a high political office. He exercised his missionary vocation mainly in the second half of the day. He played a decisive role in promoting the process of Christianisation of Korea through years of support for "Korean delegations in China". Thus he belonged to the most important Jesuit missionaries of the last quarter of the 18th century before the abolition of the Society of Jesus. The time of the emperorship and the situation of the Jesuit order in the 18th century is examined in detail! This book understands itself as a search for traces of his life stations and provides a number of important additional biographical data!
